Our first stop in Charleston was Patriots Point and Fort Sumter. At Patriots Point the USS Yorktown (aircraft carrier) has been retired from service and now civilians are able to tour the huge ship. I was amazed at the size of the aircraft carrier it was awe-inspiring!!
We left Patriots Point and took a 35 minute ferry ride to Fort Sumter. The fort is on an island right at the edge of the Charleston Harbor, just before the Atlantic Ocean. (Did you know that the civil war began at Fort Sumter?) We have had several opportunities to visit civil war sites while living in Georgia, and I am always moved by the sacrifices made for freedom for all people in this country. 
The kids (well, everyone but Sadie) really liked the fort. They thought it was cool to be at the "edge of the United States". Poor Sadie, there weren't any princesses, mermaids, or magical farries, so she spent her time at the fort pointing out to us all the dead bugs she could find.
After a ferry ride back, we ate at a place called "Fleets Landing" it was right on the harbor where the big cruise ships dock. We ate delicious sea food and the view of the harbor was awesome.
